Bio

Steven Bowman Jr. is an upright and electric bassist from the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. Starting on electric bass at the age of ten, Steven developed a passion for music, and became interested in jazz after joining his high school’s jazz band a few years later. Later in high school, he began studying the upright bass, which soon became his primary instrument. In 2019 he pursued his bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University College of Music, where he studied with world renowned bassist Rodney Whitaker. After graduating in 2023, he moved to New York to pursue a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music. There, he studied with the legendary bassist Buster Williams, while establishing himself in the New York jazz scene. Now based in New York City, Steven has performed with artists such as Eric Wyatt, Isaiah Collier, Tyreek Mcdole, and Toninho Horta, among many others.

As a teacher, I believe that learning to play music should be engaging, inspiring, and fun. I am eager to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment for music students of all ages and skill levels. I am focused on establishing good instrumental technique, learning fundamental musical skills, and developing a good ear. Whether you’re a complete beginner, or a more advanced player looking to develop a certain skill, I’m happy to help you achieve your musical goals!
