I have a limited number of vacancies for private students for the forthcoming year in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
I am a Jazz-educated saxophone performance major with a PhD in music and a Masters degree from Norway’s NTNU Jazzlinja. I have played and recorded all about the globe, with some wonderful musicians, in a variety of musical contexts from all styles of jazz groups to classical ensembles to Broadway shows, to pop and rock gigs.
We can work on improvisation, any style, musicianship such as ear training and sight reading. Jazz, classical music or really whatever you are into, it is all within my purview. I love teaching beginners and can help children and youths with school music, school bands or to prepare for exams. My two earliest teachers were themselves students of technique guru Joe Allard, teacher to guys like Mike Brecker, so I can help you get your fundamentals and embouchure stuff right. I also have experience working in a small woodwind repair workshop and I can help you sort out problems with your instrument and reeds etc. I also double sporadically on clarinet and flute, and can teach those instruments.
I keep it fun with the kids, I am not one of those that think making music a horrible stressful experience for beginners is in anyway beneficial. I have lot of experience teaching young people, and feel I have a pretty good grasp on what keeps them enthusiastic. I have rather a lot of teaching experience under my belt generally in fact, in a number of different countries and within a number of differing educational contexts from schools, to bands, to lecturing in tertiary Jazz courses to students undertaking composition and performance majors.
I can also teach arranging and composition, as I lectured in those areas in the conservatory in Dublin, Ireland. I myself was fortunate enough to learn from some of the best. So if you want to learn how to write horn arrangements for your band I can help you with that. I am happy to work with songwriters that want to develop their compositions or arrange them for a band.
I can do one off lessons, but I am ideally looking to fill regular places in my teaching schedule, so preference is given to those who want to organise a weekly lesson. Fees are standard for NYC, drop me an email ad we can discuss it. Weekly student fees payable per month in advance. Drop me a line if you have any questions!
Also I’m available for any saxophone duties with bands etc, and can organise jazz groups for venues, weddings, corporate functions and any event.
