Bio

Growing up in China, I came from a Classical piano background. In my teenage years, I discovered jazz and improvisation. Compared to Classical education, jazz is not as prominent in China. But I was lucky enough to meet a jazz pianist, Oleg Roschin, who taught me for two years, and changed my musical life. The experience of studying with Oleg not only expanded my own musicality, but also influenced many of the ways I teach now. As an educator, he is thorough, experienced, and creates an amazing balance between execution of technique and pushing my own creativity. I have strived to do the same, and revisit many lessons with him to deliver concepts to my students. I continued my education in Boston at Berklee College of Music, where my musical and teaching experiences expanded further. The experiences there paved the way for me to build my own career as an artist and educator, and I currently live in New York to study jazz at NYU and pursue that dream.

My piano studio aims to create a space of growth, inclusivity, and exploration. Whether you are a teenager trying to learn a new skill, or an adult revisiting an old hobby in your spare time, I am happy to include all backgrounds and levels in my studio, where you will be encouraged to grow and explore different musical territories, and achieve your individual goals as a musician. I look forward to meeting you and being a part of your journey!

Teaching Info

In my teaching, I focus on the individual and their experiences, needs, and interests. I create a balance between teaching technique and theory and their application to different existing songs and pieces. I created a safe environment for students to explore, while encouraging them to push past their own comfort zones. Practicing music can be difficult and present challenges to people along the way. I like to choose songs and pieces that people already know and like in order to teach concepts, so that they are learning from music they already enjoy. Learning music should never be for an outcome, but to enjoy the process, and that is the experience I aim to give to my students.
