Bio
Hello!! I’m May, a Chinese-Canadian violinist, emerging as both a classical and jazz musician, leaving my mark on the vibrant New York music scene. After graduating with honors in Violin Performance from the University of Toronto, I completed my graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music, where I received the President’s Award under the guidance of Lucy Robert. I’m also delving into the world of jazz violin under the mentorship of Regina Carter, by my enthusiasm for this vibrant genre. My musical journey began when I was four years old and I have been recognized in the First National Violin Competition of China (2007), the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Orford Music Festival, the Domaine Forget International Music Festival and the Gingold Miami Chamber festival. As a dedicated orchestral violinist, I served as concertmaster for orchestras, including the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra. My international performances range from Europe with the Calgary Youth Orchestra to collaborations with renowned ensembles. My impact extends beyond performance; I co-authored a journal article on “The Mental Health Benefits of Improvisational Music Therapy for Young Adults.” with Dr. Amy Clements-Cortes in the Canadian Music Educators Journal. I offer a unique blend of artistry, leadership, and scholarly contributions to the world of music. Currently, I’m freelancing and teaching in NYC while pursuing further studies at NYU.
