Bio

Hello! My name is Schuyler and I recently graduated with my BFA in Music Composition and Performance from California Institute of the Arts. At CalArts I had the opportunity to study with incredible composers and guitarist such as Thomas Leeb, Mark Lowenstein and Miroslav Tadic. I am a professional musician and songwriter who performs all original sets on the guitar, ukulele, bass and piano. I am currently attending the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Writers Workshop as an auditor.

Even though my parents were not musicians, they raised me in a home constantly filled with the sounds of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchel, Rush, The Who, Steven Sondheim and so many more incredible artists who would soon become my biggest idols. My own music is influenced by a wide variety of performers and music genres from folk to pop to musical theater to punk. My guitar style features detailed chord progressions along with deft fingerpicking. I have had the opportunity to open for performers such as Ellis Paul and Loudon Wainwright III and have worked with broadway performers and directors including Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, Dear Evan Hansen) as an actress.

Because my own experience in music has been so colored by my love for creative expression I realized there was a gap in the music education industry. While written theory and Suzuki methods work for some learners, it absolutely does not work for everyone. In my lessons, students are not only taught how to play their instruments technically but are given the space to find their own artistic voices.

Teaching Info

In my lessons students should expect to play the music they enjoy listening to, build a strong foundation in music theory and work on their confidence as performers and creators. I try my best to foster a truly respectful and loving environment where my students are excited to learn and aren’t scared of making mistakes. It is from those mistakes where we most often find our moments of genius.

In terms of materials used, that really depends on where the student is in their learning process and will be determined during the first lesson. Some people work really well from a book and others need a slightly different approach.
